The marasquin, maraschino, marrasquino or maraskino is a base marasche liquor, a particular type of cherries from particularly sour taste. To prepare the maraschino cherries cherries are put in alcoholic infusion, when the infusion is prepared, the mixture is distilled off and matured. Finally, the distillate is transformed into liquor by adding us syrup of water and sugar and lowering the alcohol content up to 25% VOL.

This historically liquor was produced in the areas of Zadar in Dalmatia (Croatia), when the city was part of the Italian territory.

Origin of Maraschino

The original recipe of Maraschino liqueur was created by Dominican monks from the monastery in today Zadar Croatia (formerly belonging to the Italian region of Dalmatia) at the beginning of the sixteenth century.

The liqueur "Maraschino" owes its name to the particular variety of these cherries "Marasche" with which the liquor is produced.

Maraschino was much appreciated in the courts of Europe by Emperor Napoleon who consumed primarily after his dinner, the French King Louis XVIII, Charles X, Louis Philippe.
But it also consumed in Russia Emperor Nicholas I and England's King George IV and Queen Victoria

Cocktails.

Maraschino is used in the production of many cocktails.

The famous "Hemingway Special" cocktail, inspired by the writer himself.

Ingrediants
    6 cl white rum
    1.5 cl Maraschino
    4 cl Grapefruit juice
    Lime juice 1.5 cl
    Gasket: slice of lime

Preparation of cocktails Hemingway Special
Place the ingredients in a shaker with ice and shake.
Subsequently filter in a cocktail glass with crushed ice;
Garnish with a slice of lime.

The famous "Daiquiri" Ernest Hemingway drank at the local Floridita.

Ingrediants
    40 ml white rum
    20 ml of lime juice
    10 ml of sugar syrup or 1 teaspoon of white cane sugar or beet sugar
    drops of maraschino
    ice

Preparation of cocktails Daiquiri
Before preparing the Daiquiri put in the freezer the cup in which you will serve your cocktail to have it well icy. In a shaker pour the white rum, using a jigger, (from barman dispenser). Then squeeze the lime squeezer with the appropriate that effectively shortens the time.
Pour the sugar syrup. Add ice, filling up to the edge of the shaker.
Shake, pour into ice bowl and garnish your Daiquiri with a slice of dehydrated lime.
